Salty Portal
In the Ball of Light Documentary (see it here) I refer to The Ball of Light as being a portal to another place. That idea has always stuck with me. I imagine that a time travelling species uses it as a way to travel using light, across time and space. If you were going to pop into existence without being discovered, the middle of a giant salt lake is probably the place to do it!
